Once you have a security alarm system installed in your home or
business, you are responsible for using it correctly and preventing
false alarms. False alarms are a growing concern for the alarms
industry. They work against the home owner and emergency services
like police and fire departments by consuming resources and
desensitizing watchful neighbours. They also increase costs for
police departments and alarm companies. These costs are then passed
back to everyone in the form of higher taxes and industry services
charges.
8 STEPS FOR REDUCING
FALSE ALARMS
- Instruct all authorized users on the proper operation of your
alarm system. Call ADTand let us know you are testing your
system and provide all users with hands-on practice.
- Make sure your system is programmed with a CANCELL CODE. A
cancel code allows you to disarm your system with a confidential
code immediately after setting off a false alarm. This alarm
system will automatically signal ADT that an authorized user is at
the premise, the alarm is false and no further action is required.
- Ensure that each system user has an Emergency Response Card
and a confidential password to properly identify themselves to
ADT. Make sure that you notify ADT of all passwords you want
us to add or delete from your file.
- If your system does not have a Cancel Code, instruct
all authorized users to call the ADT Monitoring Station
immediately if they have set off a false alarm. All authorized
users must provide ADT with their name, system number and
confidential password.
- If you do not have a siren on your alarm system, please have
one installed so that users are aware that they have set-off a
false alarm and can take action to ensure that emergency services
is not dispatched.
- Test your alarm system regularly to ensure that it is working
properly. We recommend that you test your system on a bi-monthly
basis. Before testing your system, please call ADT to inform
them that you are testing your system. You must provide ADT
with your name, system number and confidential password.
- If your alarm system is malfunctioning, call your ADT Dealer
immediately. DO NOT ARM YOUR SYSTEM until it has been repaired.
You should also advise ADT of the situation and ask them not
to respond to alarms until you or your ADT dealer advise
them that the system has been repaired.
- Make sure you are aware of the Police False Alarm
Program in your jurisdiction
